This diagram was prepared for the NicamakaŽ sprang woven hammock models but it also applies to most hammocks types. The preferred hanging configuration is high end attachment so the hammocks hang or drape with a "smiley-face" profile.
High attachment and proper separation distance gives a safe, stable and comfortable
catenary angle. The worst and least-safe arrangement is the low-attachment
arrangement on
most up-from-the-floor hammock stands - which require spreader (spacer) bars to
relieve pressure. This tight configuration
presents a
trampoline-like surface which in turn increases instability and danger.
If there is no overhead or vertical supports in an outdoor area, one or two posts strategically place will both save money and provide ideal hanging for almost all hammock types. This in turn allows the option of eliminating the need for spreader bars thus achieving maximum comfort. Once spreader bars are removed from the hammock equation, then the hammock become more useful and is easily relocated for use in indoor environments.
