USA type hammocks are usually always with spreader bars and with either ropes or mesh fabrics for the beds. These are usually seen in low-attach, up-from-floor stands. The primary reason for the spreader bars is to shorten the overall length of the hammock so it will fit into those stands. The spreader or stretcher bar hammock is seen is so many visual ads, movies and TV shows, that it is the image that most in North America associate with the word hammock. Although actually very new to hammock types compared to original thousands year old concepts, many consider and refer to the spreader-bar hammock as a "traditional" style even though it is a relative new-comer to hammocks. There is also a misconception that the wider the bar, the more
stable the hammocks. This is not true and the laws of physics
and gravity can rudely take over and the wider the bar the tippier the hammock.
Basically, take care with spreader bar hammocks. There are newer
spreader-bar hammock styles with two supports at each end which will
restrain and stabilize it. With the 2 point support at each
end these can be used in much shorter, space saving from-the-floor
stands. These configurations are more like low, around-the-pool
loungers.
