Sprang weaving is one of
civilizations oldest weaving methods. It is a simple method of
inter-l ocking parallel cords to produce a
strong, flat fabric that is fixed in one dimension and expansive in
the other dimension. The process does not use a loom and can be done
between any vertical posts or small thin trees. It is labor intensive and
requires a lot of walking around posts while adding and interlocking
the cords. The coastal natives of the Caribbean basin and the South
American Rivers used this
process to produce fishing nets and hammocks, and the root word for
hammock in the Caribbean was "hamaca" - Taino word
for fishing net and in Venezuela was "chinchorro" -Juajiro word
for fishing net.
Details on Sprang Weave Process
This sprang-weave process produces
the perfect fabric for hammocks as the cross-ways
stretch
creates a cocooning effect that is both safe and comfortable.
(Where these hamacas were used, it was never a good idea to fall on
the ground as one could become part of the food chain.) When
modern fabrics and materials are
used in the construction, the sprang-weave hammock or hamaca adds
beauty to its function and becomes a life long furniture item. It
becomes to furniture, what blue jeans are to clothing.
Ways To Use Sprang-Weave Hammock
The sprang woven hammocks sold on this site are the Nicamaka®s from
Nicaragua and the Mayan from Mexico. The Nicaraguan hamacas have
thicker cords than the Mayan and are configured with a deeper center
so that sitting up in one end is comfortable and lying at an angle
allows horizontal rest. The Mayan hamacas have lighter
factory-twisted nylon cords and are configured higher in the center
for perpendicular
