Sprang weaving is one of civilizations oldest weaving methods. It is a simple method of inter-locking parallel cords to produce a strong, flat fabric that is fixed in one dimension and expansive in the other dimension. The process does not use a loom and can be done between any vertical posts or small thin trees. It is labor intensive and requires a lot of walking around posts while adding and interlocking the cords. The Nicamaka® hammock and the Mayan hammock use the sprang woven process, though with different configurations and materials. The coastal natives of the Caribbean basin and the South American Rivers used this process to produce fishing nets and hammocks, and the root word for hammock in the Caribbean was "hamaca" - Taino word for fishing net and in Venezuela was "chinchorro" -Juajiro  word for fishing net. Cross-weave hammocks are made with loom-fashioned fabrics characterized by warp and woof construction.  They can be hand-loomed or machined-loomed and are rigid in both width and length dimensions.  The quality of the fabrics is, of course, determined by the quality of the yarns used to produce the cloth.
